What Is Prop 65 and Why Do You See It on So Many Products?

If you've ever purchased a product with a label that says "WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm," you’ve encountered California’s Proposition 65 (Prop 65) warning. These warnings appear on everything from furniture and cookware to electronics and even food. But what does it actually mean?

Many people wonder: Is this product dangerous? Should I avoid it? Why do I see this label everywhere? Let's break down what Prop 65 is, why it exists, and what it means for consumers.

What Is Prop 65?

Proposition 65, officially called the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law designed to protect people from exposure to harmful chemicals. The law requires businesses to provide clear warnings if a product contains chemicals that are known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

The state of California maintains a list of over 900 chemicals covered under Prop 65, including:

Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury)

Pesticides & herbicides

Phthalates (found in plastics and vinyl)

Solvents & industrial chemicals

Certain pharmaceuticals and food additives

The idea behind the law is to inform consumers so they can make educated choices about the products they buy and use.

Why Do You See Prop 65 Warnings Everywhere?

The biggest reason you see Prop 65 warnings on so many products—even those sold outside of California—is because companies that sell nationwide often choose to put the warning on all products rather than label only the ones going to California.

Here’s why:

🔹 California’s strict regulations – Even trace amounts of a chemical can trigger a warning.

🔹 Avoiding lawsuits – Companies can face significant fines if they fail to label a product that contains a listed chemical.

🔹 Better safe than sorry – Some businesses label everything rather than testing for every possible listed chemical.

Because Prop 65 standards are stricter than federal regulations, a warning does not necessarily mean a product is unsafe by national standards—it just means the manufacturer is complying with California law.

Does a Prop 65 Warning Mean a Product Is Dangerous?

Not necessarily. Prop 65 warnings don’t measure actual risk, only the presence of listed chemicals. The amount of a chemical needed to require a label can be extremely low—sometimes far below the levels deemed harmful by organizations like the FDA, EPA, or WHO.

For example:

  • A coffee shop in California must display a Prop 65 warning because roasted coffee beans contain acrylamide—a chemical on the Prop 65 list—even though the FDA says there's no significant risk from drinking coffee.

  • A ceramic plate may have a Prop 65 label because its glaze contains trace amounts of lead, even though it's sealed and meets federal safety standards.

In many cases, a Prop 65 warning is more about legal compliance than an immediate health risk. However, for people who want to reduce exposure to potentially harmful chemicals, these labels can be a useful guide.

How to Reduce Exposure to Prop 65 Chemicals

Even though a Prop 65 warning doesn’t always mean a product is harmful, if you prefer to be cautious, here are some tips to minimize exposure:

Choose GREENGUARD Gold or non-toxic certified products for furniture and home goods.

Look for lead-free & BPA-free labels on dishware and plastics.

Wash new clothing and textiles before use to remove residual chemicals.

Use natural or organic alternatives for beauty and personal care products.

Avoid plastic food containers with phthalates—opt for glass or stainless steel instead.
